The statistics are overwhelming.

Most of us will experience some sort of mental illness at some point in our lives.

It is also more likely than not, that we will all know someone whose lives will end too soon due to the battles within their own minds becoming too much.

To put it put it bluntly: This is serious shit and we MUST TALK ABOUT IT.

HIM. HER. THEY. OLDER. YOUNGER. YOU.

This is not something to be kept behind a stoic face and only known about in the depths of your own mind.

We lost a friend on the 7th of February 2017. She took her own life. At the time this was an initial shock, but in retrospect things always seem clearer. She had had a long battle with mental illness.

After she passed, I drew this leopard shark from one of many gorgeous photographs she left behind.

I think it fitting that profits of the Leopard Shark prints be donated to organisations which provide support to those in need of mental health support.

PLEASE if you are feeling something is not quite right, reach out. The resources are there.

Here is some more info about the not for profit organisations you can choose from:

The Fly Program

Something a little different yet really aligns with what I know works for me when I’m in a funk. Get outside. Remove yourself from the grind.

It became our commitment to provide the resources to assist Australian men to find a release and increase their quality of life, whether directly, or indirectly touched by these threads of mental illness and instituting a new outlet – participation in the natural world as a reprieve from the day-to-day challenges too many men face in our community.” The Fly Program

Donations go towards tangible things like repairing bikes, fly rods, tents or providing food for trips into the wild for participants in need of mental health support.

Beyond Blue

We’ve all heard of them. And rightly so. They’ve been around for over 20 years and are not resting on their laurels.

Through our Beyond 2020 Strategy, we are working across three strategic priorities:

  1. Promoting mental health and wellbeing so people have greater knowledge, feel safe to talk openly about their issues and are supported to ask for help when they need to.
  2. Being a trusted source of information, advice and support so we can all better understand how to maintain our mental health and take steps to recover from mental health conditions.
  3. Working together to prevent suicide by playing a lead role in the national effort to prevent suicide through research, information, advice and support, and advocacy.

LifeLine

Lifeline was founded in 1963 and is Australia’s leading suicide prevention service. As large as they are they are there for the individual.

They have a commitment to ensuring that no person in Australia has to face their darkest moments alone and continue to work towards ensuring their services are available to any Australian who needs them at any time. They also recognise that there are multiple platforms of communication these days and not everyone feels comfortable picking up the phone. They're available face to face, via message, phone and online mediums.

And here are some other fantastic places to check out (which unfortunately are not yet accepting donations but are SO worth checking out):

Move 4 Mental Health

Raise awareness for the power of movement and nature as protective strategies for mental wellbeing and to reduce the symptoms of mental illness. As well as adventures to get us away from the grind, Kylianne also runs workshops on mental health first aid and suicide prevention and has had the privilege of speaking all across the country, sharing her story and experiences in the hope of helping others in their journey.

Hey mate.

Is an initiative of Gabe McClelland's which amplifies the connection between men and digs a little deeper than surface-level conversations. Hey mate offers different ways to connect with others through group online conversation and challenges the uncomfortable-ness of facilitating a conversation around men's health and wellbeing.

Impact is broad and reached through workshops, events within schools, sporting environments & the workplace throughout Australia & New Zealand.

The Sage Society

So many fantastic bite sized resources on their happiness hub under numerous topics such as: Parenting + Family, Mind + Emotions, Love + Relationships, Personal Development.
